Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a social media marketer? What’s your career story?

It was, in a way, by accident. I started my first business to have more time with my newly born daughter. I was initially helping virtual PAs with how to generate more clients.

And that’s when I started using social media, particularly Twitter and saw the potential. So, I decided to help clients with social media marketing, show them the ropes, explain how it works.

My business grew to the point where I couldn’t handle all the business coming in. So, I thought I’d create a social media management tool – and remember, in those days there weren’t many.

Now, I’m mostly focusing on coaching and mentoring business owners and entrepreneurs. Helping them set up their business and helping them promote their business online.  I connect them with top influencers in their niche, help with content marketing, social media and so on.

I love working with entrepreneurs, SME’s and charities.

Q2 What are your favorite Facebook marketing tools?

I LOVE tools and I’m always trying out new ones.

My favourite one, and the one I use the most is @agorapulse. I use it for managing both my Facebook and my Twitter. It’s perfect for keeping track of all your mentions/shares/etc.  I also use it for scheduling and planning my content calendar. And for monitoring social media – although, particularly Twitter. They also provide in-depth, customizable analytics, so that’s another big plus in my book. And, there are apps for creating Facebook contests, quizzes, tests & exclusive discount coupons.

Other useful tools I’ve tried were @brand24 and @brandwatch – for monitoring. They can both be used for monitoring your entire social media and other websites (forums, blogs, etc.)

In terms of analytics, I use Facebook Insights, and if I need more – @quintly is my go-to. It’s a professional social media analytics tool, with in-depth analytics & competitive benchmarking.

I would also recommend @IFTTT – it’s got some very useful automations, for all major social networks. Just search for Facebook automations to see all your options and set them up.

As for content creation, I love @canva and have been using it for years.

You can use it to create all kinds of visuals, including Facebook posts (with the right sizes). It’s super easy to use, so you don’t need any design experience to get started. And you also have access to a lot of free images/icons/etc.

I’ve also recently started playing around with @wavevideoapp and loving it. It’s a video creator, and likely one of the easiest ones to use, at least that I’ve tried. You don’t need to shoot any videos yourself, just use their library of videos & images. And put together the video, with text, your logo, and in the right format for Facebook. Plus, you can create a Facebook cover photo/video, which can help you get people’s attention.

Most people turn the sound off on Facebook, so videos need text. But there is also a library of royalty-free music that you can use on your videos.

Q3 What are your favorite Twitter marketing tools?

Once again, @agorapulse – it’s the main one I use and it covers most of my Twitter marketing needs: Managing my incoming mentions, monitoring my name and for business opportunities. Scheduling tweets, managing my Twitter followers and influencer connections.

Then, there’s @canva for creating images for Twitter, such as my digital marketing tips series. I’ve started using @crelloapp recently as well – it’s very similar to Canva in features. But they’ve got their own selection of templates, so it’s great for diversifying the visuals you create.

I also use @clicktotweet to add tweetable quotes throughout my blog posts – it helps boost shares.

And since we’re on the subject of social media sharing, I use @warfareplugins on my blog.

It’s the only one that still shows the Twitter count on blog posts – i.e., how many tweets your post got.

If I want to track/analyse hashtags, I use @keyhole – works with Twitter & Instagram. And you get detailed analytics for any hashtag you want to research.

Since we’re on a Twitter Chat, it’s worth mentioning some good Twitter chat tools.

I like @tweetchat – you can pause the stream to catch up if there are too many tweets. There’s a built-in URL shortener if you need it. You can blog and highlight tweets, and of course, you can tweet live (& the hashtag is already set).

Another good option is @twubs which is quite similar to tweetchat. There’s no URL shortener, but you can see all the tweets immediately after they were posted. You have 6 different options for setting the speed of the chat. Tweets can be starred, shared and retweeted, all from within the tool.

Very impressed with it.

Q4 What other social media marketing tools do you use regularly?

I also use @buzzsumo for finding the best influencers in my niche. You can see how many followers they have, their retweet and reply ratio.

Basically, anything you need to put together a list of top Twitter (and other) influencers.

I forgot to mention @tweepi earlier – it’s a Twitter tool that uses artificial intelligence to monitor Twitter. And it finds targeted, relevant Twitter users for you to engage with, so you can grow your profile. What’s great about it is that it lets you get more targeted followers – which are more valuable.

If you get lots of followers, but they don’t care what you’re saying – what’s the point? If they don’t engage, don’t share your posts, don’t click on your links, then there’s not much value there.

Back to tools, though, another was I use regularly is @triberr. This is for boosting my social media shares and for helping me grow my social influence. It’s a blogging community, with different tribes that are passionate about the same subjects. And users browse through the latest content being posted in their tribe, and share it with their audience.

It’s great for boosting your social media shares & grow your influence. But it’s more than that, actually: it’s also a great source of quality content that I can share with my audience. Also great for meeting like minded people 🙂

Another one I forgot to mention earlier, when discussing Twitter – @paper_li. You can use it to create your very own online newspaper, which contains content based on your interests. You can also then have it posted automatically on your social media profiles.  Or, you can send your list regular newsletters with interesting content that they might like.

Q5 What are your recommended social media productivity tools?

A few of them I’ve already mentioned earlier, @agorapulse is the main one I use. It helps me plan, strategize and execute my social media – and it helps me save a lot of time doing so. You can set up automations for monitored items & for your social inbox (where you can see mentions, likes, etc.). You can assign them, delete spam automatically, tag or flag them, so they’re kept organised.

Plus I forgot to mention how they’ve recently released a new version of @agorapulse. With so many new features, like ‘saved replies’ for quick replying on social media. And translation features, as well as better, more in-depth reporting.

Another one that I talked about earlier, but it’s worth mentioning again: @ifttt. They have so many different, useful (and a few not-so-useful) automations. For example, you can automatically retweet any tweet with a certain hashtag. Or you can save all the photos you’re tagged in on Facebook, in your Dropbox. Use their search option to see every automation for different social networks, as there are a lot.

Since we’re talking productivity, I can’t not mention @trello. It’s what I use to keep track of all my different tasks and projects. Then, there’s also @evernote which is great as a journal of sorts. Basically, a place where you can collect all of your ideas as well as anything from the Internet.

Images, videos, articles, and so on can easily be added to your evernote. And it all syncs across your devices so you’ll have immediate access to your notes.

Since we’re on the subject of content, there’s also @feedly. It’s an RSS reader that allows you to keep track of all your favourite content sources. So you can easily keep up with the best content and share it with your followers.

A similar tool that I love is @flipboard which is more of a digital magazine.  You can see all the top content of the day, based on your particular interests. So you can then share it, or you can also create your very own magazine.

Another tool I absolutely love is @grammarly. It catches 250 different types of grammatical errors & it gets context (so it catches a lot more than Word!). The best part, is that you can add a browser extension. And whatever website you’re on, Grammarly will automatically correct your tweets/updates/etc. In some cases, when you make a mistake it even explains what you did wrong.

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a digital marketer?

I’ve always loved tech, communication and connecting with people market = ways that connects people, brands, biz & communities.

Digital marketing offers so many new opportunities to connect, tell our stories, share, expand reach & put your brand on the digital map.

I’m a digital marketer in heart & spirit. I love how it helps to merge CX, connection to target audience and brand presence. Digital marketing is changing my life / biz. It helps me use different channels to talk, engage and connect with different target audience.

YEP! I always say, Social & Digital Marketing are not my job. Is what I love “doing”

Digital marketing is merging the connected & experiential world at a fast pace, leading to a more collaborative world.

After working in corporate marketing, I started my own business. Applying digital & content marketing shaping the landscape.

I’m a femme-preneur, solopreneur, focusing on offering services: digital & content strategy, marketing and storytelling. Digital gives more opportunities, a voice to every business. Strategy, consistency, execution & high quality content/services are key.

Thanks Todd! I’m in the re-design and update mode at the moment, so I’d love to hear your thought after too 🙂

I’m a big supporter of women in business! Coaching them, empowering them and I love supporting communities.

Q2 What is story telling and how can it help brands?

Storytelling in short: the ability to convey the right message at the right time, that attracts, resonates & triggers.

I tell my clients storytelling is nothing new or recent. Conveying meaning through different mediums has existed for centuries.

Storytelling now is becoming a strategic approach of (not) capturing attention because of info overload, so much content out there.

Storytelling = best mix of: data, analysis, planning, knowing the ins and outs of your target audience and what triggers them = good start.

Yes, absolutely! Relatability & spreading the business values & ideas is key here.

Storytelling gives brands option to connect to their audience, share “message”, but leaves room for participation & contribution.

Contribution / co-creation is key element of Storytelling. Brands offer some stories as “hooks” that target audience can easily interpret. Being able to relate & internalize & refer to a certain emotion, feeling, exp, character, tradition = good storytelling.

Storytelling is becoming a strategic business, communications & marketing tool across industries. Storytelling “works” both on conscious & subconscious level. It’s how our brains process info & what triggers those “responses”.

Storytelling is one of the tools that can help you determine intent, behaviour, needs and align/drill down your approach acceptance.

Q3 What are your favorite examples of successful story telling?

I’ll try to go locally a bit with this.

The Brewery decided to take elements we all know, learn about, grow up with, read about & wow it into their campaigns.

So there are relatable elements that are given a modern, fresh twist, but are still timely, proper & impactful.

So, there’s not just building up your brand message & spreading it, but also wowing that fun element of attracting new target audience.

So the Polish examples are great because it relates to so many people who have same issues & same challenges.

Storytelling in the Polish example doesn’t feel like a “story made”. It’s about a family, relations, missing people you love.

So stories needn’t refer to the exact thing xyz, but refer to a feeling, sentiment, insights, shared experience = universal.

A lot of times storytelling plays to the one things that is in common to all of us = human nature. Experience. Authenticity.

Q4 What is your one story telling tip that usually works for most brands?

It starts with YOU. Storytelling is authentic when it comes from our own or shared experiences. Not a fabricated / constructed X.

Storytelling is most successful when it’s timely, appropriate (be mindful of cult, religious diff) and motivates ppl to DO STH.

Storytelling shouldn’t feel forced or go against the flow of how we usually consume content. It’s should disrupt the “flow”.

100% YES!

Storytelling is not just one-way source. It’s a way to engage different communities, sources & crowdsourcing when you implement.

Read more about facilitating a compelling human-centered setting for storytelling. It’s not only about relatablitly, but really motivating people to do somehing with your content, stories, connections.

Q5 What are your favorite writing and marketing tools?

I’m a sucker for tools!

First of all – Twitter desktop & mobile. It teaches you consistency, clarity & getting to the point. Also connecting with people.

Because I spend most of the time on-the-go, I’ll share some mobile apps and tools I use.

@evernote is my go-to-notebook, article saver and bookmarker. I save my reading, notes, thoughts & content.

@trello and @SlackHQ are my go-to-tools for project management an collaboration and communication across teams. Love it!

GIPHY is my go to tool for GIFs & Communication across channels. It conveys “emotions” wonderfully.

#PicsArt is for photos, collages and edits on the go. Desygner for Android mobile – templates & designs on the go.

@canva is my go-to-tool desktop for content creation & design. @AdobeSpark – do make it your best friend, Buzzers!

For content curation: @nuzzel & @Flipboard. Great tools for curation!

And I’m a big fan and user of @buffer. Love the product, love the team even more and love their community.

And for video I use Twitter Video, #MiniMovie and audio @anchor – great to share your thoughts or start a podcast.

And for writing/reading, do check out @grammarly (great for non-native Eng speakers), @medium and my Kindle always with me.

And since you’ve probably seen I’m a huge Twitter fan – I use Tweetdeck to monitor conversations, mentions, tweets & all the fun.

Questions we discussed

Q1 Why organic SEO? It’d not the most exciting thing to do as it provides pretty slow results, so why are you passionate about it?

It’s always changing and no problem is ever exactly the same. I like the thrill of the hunt for SEO issues. Plus, I like to learn new things which is great since there is always a need to adapt. Might get bored otherwise!

It’s been a fun ride so far. Any of you have much experience with SEO?

Q2 What are the essential steps for a page SEO audit? How to tell if your content is findable?

There are a lot of steps, but I’ll provide some highlights followed by a helpful link.

Crawl all your pages first, that’ll highlight a lot of basic issues like titles, metas, H1 usage, etc…I like @screamingfrog

To audit page content relevancy, I like the Page Optimization feature from @moz

My favorite crawling tools are @screamingfrog and @deepcrawl

When auditing a specific page, I like to use Varvy as a quick look for other issues. So fast and easy!

Now a days, you also need to run your page through Page Speed Insights.

And don’t forget about being mobile friendly! Use the Mobile friendly Test.

Check your robots.txt, x-robots and metas to ensure you’re not blocking the engines from seeing your content, happens a lot! I see variations of disallows and no index quite a bit when new sites/pages roll out from developing environment.

It is! Time is running short, I think we’ll see some shakeups in regards to mobile in the coming weeks.

Q3 What are some SEO resources you recommend our buzzers bookmark and read?

Here’s a good piece on steps for an audit from @ahrefs VERY helpful if you’re just learning.

Learn about Mobile first Indexing from @mobilemoxie and @suzzicks. They’re so smart!

I love this Cruft Finder post and Tool from @balibones & @goinflow to find pages creating index bloat.

Agreed! good folks over there sharing awesome and HELPFUL content

This will help you with your audit takeaways: How to Prioritize SEO tasks from @britneymuller @moz.

Finally, get your content seen! 43 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Site from @dohertyjf and @getcredo.

Q4 What’s the future of SEO? Is it dying? 🙂

HA! It isn’t going anywhere, but it is always changing. The foundational stuff is still there though.

There are so many aspects to look at as an SEO these days that we’re just spread a little thinner.

There are so many aspects of SEO that it’s easy to settle on a specific niche like content, technical, UX, Analytics, etc…

GOOD content, mobile aspects, user engagement, technical aspects….SEO isn’t just keywords!

Q5 Please list your favorite SEO tools

Oh boy! There a lot of tools that I use, but I’ll share the ones that are the most helpful and used regularly.

I mentioned @screamingfrog earlier, it’s the best crawling tool for the money. Crawls sites and highlights so many opportunities.

@ahrefs, @moz, @semrusuh are very popular and they’re great and there’s a lot more to try!

If you’re looking at sites other than your own, you need to check out @BuiltWith (free) to get some insights into the back end.

I haven’t but I will check it now!

@answerthepublic (free) is great at finding the questions people are asking when creating your content strategy.

@keywordtoolio (free) for discovering keywords people also search for related to your keyword categories.

@gtmetrix (free) is great from an auditing standpoint and gives some good speed & technical insights.

Third party tools are scraping search results for “people also searched” terms and the keyword planner API. We don’t get organic keywords anymore, but I say just create content relevant to your key words and you’ll be just fine.

I know I mentioned it earlier, but Varvy (free) is great to give you a quick look at things and tells you why they’re important.

Accessibility can affect user engagement which may affect things. Accessibility is for UX. Also, lawsuits are becoming a big thing for brands whose sites aren’t ADA friendly.

How to Get Your Articles Ranked in Top 5 for a Competitive Term with Jason Quey @jdquey #VCBuzz

How to Get Your Articles Ranked in Top 5 for a Competitive Term with Jason Quey @jdquey #VCBuzzAny blogger’s dream is to see their articles rank in top 5 of Google. But how to achieve that? Is it possible to do that for each and every article a blogger publishes? Let’s discuss!

About Jason

Jason is no stranger to #VCBuzz: We have already had the pleasure of having him when we chatted on influencer marketing.

Questions we discussed

Q1 How can anyone learn SEO? What are your recommended resources?

SEO boils down to 4 things: Understanding your customer, solving your customer’s problems, keyword research, link building.

Understanding your customer: What are the Q’s they want answered? People use Google to get an answer to their questions.

Solving your customer’s problems: Can you answer the question your customer has better than the competition? This also includes anticipating questions they will have, great design, a fast website, and other user experience things.

Keyword research: How many people are asking this question? Good KWR will help you to scale your ROI + make it easier to rank.

Link building: How many people on the web reference your resource? Solid keyword research typically requires less links to rank.

More on my theory on how to rank faster here.

Q2 How to determine keywords for your future article?

Start by figuring out the questions your customers have. Then determine what keywords fit around that question or answer.

I recommend you plan out your keywords before you write your content. Then write the best doggone content on the web.

Q3 Do you evaluate keyword competition?

Neglecting keyword research is the difference between swimming in a red ocean & discovering a blue ocean of opportunity.

I like to trade up the keyword chain. Start by going for an easy keyword and get traffic.

Then look at the keywords it ranks for. Find one with more traffic and go after that keyword.

Look at the keywords to see how likely you will rank and potential traffic you will receive.

I recommend checking out @Ahrefs to help with planning. I know @Alexa has a tool too, but haven’t used it much.

Q4 How to optimize an article for keywords?

Depends if I’m going after a single keyword or a cluster of keywords.

In general, keep to basic on-page SEO best practices and you’ll be fine. Keyword in H1, URL, in images, etc. Fun fact, I ranked my profile pic for “best looking marketer” using image SEO. 😛

Q5 What are further essential steps to getting an article ranked?

Keep reading, learning, & optimizing. 80% of your results falls under best practices. But it is search engine *optimization*.

These days, I learn about SEO tactics, theories, etc from @danshure, @johndoherty, and @backlinko. Read their stuff.

Not sure exact time, but under 2 weeks in a men’s style niche.

I’m a fan of guest posts on big DA sites and relationships with influencers. For guest posts, @codeless writes content for a fraction of the cost of a content writer, making it easy to scale. IMO, the best strategy fits with the gifts/resources God has given you.

Using Subconscious Marketing Techniques to Up Your Conversions with Neal Cole @northresearch #VCBuzzWe talk a lot about conversions, because, in the end, that’s what matters for out bottom line! Today we are going to approach the topic creatively to discuss the psychological aspect of improving your site conversions.

***Add #VCBuzz chats to your calendar here.

About Neal

Neal Cole @northresearch is founder of Conversion Uplift Ltd. Neal is digital marketing consultant and writer focusing on behavioral economics and psychology. Read Neal’s article listing subconscious marketing techniques to boost sales and UX which inspired today’s chat!

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you get into digital marketing? What’s your career story?

I was market research manager with a passion for psychology of behaviour for number of years.

I got recruited to join E-commerce retailer to optimise conversion & started reading books by Dan Ariely Predictably Irrational.

I love reading books on behavioural economics like Nudge by Richard Thaler who just go Nobel Prize for Economics

Q2 What are the most effective subconscious marketing techniques to improve conversions?

Conformism one of most powerful as people want to feel they belong & don’t want to stand out from crowd.

Social norms most powerful subconscious influences – we follow without thinking & dislike not being seen to conform with in-group.

Commitment & consistency one of strongest social influences. Start with a small request and then you can ask for a larger one later.

Yes, emotions are involved in all our decisions – so important to think about how people want to feel when buying your product. People who have had the part of the brain damaged that deals with emotions can’t make decisions in their best interests.

For more details I wrote this blog on using commitment and consistency for conversions.

Also important to never forget rational reason to buy as well – can’t optimise something without substance.

Q3 What are your recommended books and resources when it comes to psychology in marketing?

Decoded, The Science behind what we buy – Phil Barden @philbarden is a brilliant book as brings together theory with practice.

Herd – How to change mass behaviour by harnessing our true nature By Mark Earls @herdmeister.

Q4 Have you seen or come across some conversion optimization case studies that were based on psychology?

Yes, lots from eConsultancy – check this one out on social proof.

I’ve also written this post on how social networks influence human behaviour.

Nick has written lots of blogs and a book on the psychology of persuasion.

Also worth checking out my blog on Are most purchase decisions the result of others?

Q5 What are your favorite conversion optimization tools?

Hotjar is my best tool that I also use on my site. Hotjar is free if your site doesn’t have too much traffic and can be used to help capture feedback and get people to give email.

Here is a review of Hotjar I’ve written. Hotjar allows you to record users as they browse and add polls to your site among lots of other things.

Start-ups should get Hotjar & 4 other free tools for analytics, SEO, email marketing & customer feedback. I recommend these 5 free tools, including Hotjar.

Content is the ultimate software I agree as why else are visitors coming to the site. We should always think about the user first and why they are coming to our site.

At the same time we need to run our site as a business if we want to be here for the long term. It’s getting that balance between customer needs and our own business goals.

If we put the customer first we are more likely to meet our own business goals and they are more likely to return to our site.

Check out my digital marketing toolbox if there are other solutions you are looking for.

Here are few other books to consider.

In short int was a decision I made consciously. A decision with firm commitment !! #Digitalmarketing is just a bonus!

I truly believe that anyone can achieve anything once a mindset is solid and they invest in a self discovery process

Always had a taste for adventure and wanting to go beyond limits. Digital marketing is perfect medium.

Q2 How to motivate yourself to become a business owner? Can everyone do that?

Motivation comes from within. It comes form the big goal that is ahead of me.

I am not a fan of goal setting as such.. what I truly understand is the intuitive part of wanting to achieve. Achievement is any small step forward, that is how I stay on top every day.

Q3 How to handle business failure? Do you have any experience in that? Can you share your advice?

Business failures ?? lol how long have we got ?????

There is no progress without failure. Failure means you try something you have not done before. Failure for me is learning. And each step, I realize there is something is the process I needed to learn.

This can be skill, about myself, about others. you cannot be perfect at first try of skiing down a mountain, but with the right skills ans attitude gold medal is waiting.

Look at the journey: Edison, Ford, Bill Gates, Walt Disney, Einstein, Lincoln, Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Spielberg. That is the attitude I have: fall, learn, get up, move on, do better.

What I say, let it be you who writes the paper!!

Q4 How to build work-life balance? Does it exist?

My work is my passion. For me this balance comes from people who I surround myself with.

Similar minds magnify one another, and i want to be surrounded with these amazing people in my life.

That is passion and commitment, most powerful driving force behind success. YES.

As well as my passion for digital marketing and luxury sector, my life is also my 3 dogs. Once I finish my major plans, they will have to have social media exposure profiles too. ADORE MY DOGS !! My babies. Plus they are ok if I am up doing twitter 2am!!

I am truly blessed and grateful to do what I do and meet so many like minded people. ” I grow by lifting others “.

Q5 What are your favorite business management and marketing tools?

I am a firm believer in strategic planning, customer relationship, and mastermind.

Wasting time and money is perfectly avoidable with strategy , well executed of course with passion and commitment.

I like personal contact, and always available on SM or whatsapp to clients, sponsors, or anyone who just want to say hello.

I love selling. My mentor said nothing happens before someone sells something. True. But there is selling and selling. I believe in talking to PEOPLE on social media, NOT buyers, big difference.

Perfect marketing tools indeed!

And marketing tools !! Tune in / Buzzsumo, how to get the content that will get you out. Very important.

If you are not in bed tweeting at 2am GMT when preparing the content for the next time zone who wakes up..time to up the game!

Check out #Picreel #VWO , get as many vids as possible, know your hashtags #Socedo

About Roxana

Our VCBees are likely to already know Roxana. She was our guest a couple of years ago (time flies!) teaching us how to build a successful freelancing career.

Roxana Nasoi is founder at SERPlified. She is based in Bucharest, Romania.

Questions we discussed

Q1 Please let us know how your life has changed since 2015! How has been your freelancing career doing? What’s new?

Wow, time really flies, doesn’t it? In the past 2yrs I’ve rediscovered my potential.

I learned to let go of teams and startup dreams that didn’t work out.  But letting go also gave me clarity on what to focus on. And I’ve been building my own network, solo, since spring 2016.

My freelancing career has been great. As always, freelancing is a safe haven for me when I need time off from “being the boss”.

I’m currently working with freelancers and building the digital agency behind @serplified. It’s quite the adventure. I’ve also been traveling a lot more and connecting with people throughout Europe and the US.

Hope to someday meet each & every one of you. 🙂

Q2 What was your most shared article ever and what do you think accounted for its success?

Well, there were a few, but the best one now counts over 85,000 shares, on @lifehackorg. This one.

*Note, we’re discussing organic not viral. This had about 5,000 shares in the first month, and then escalated.

I think the topic was spot on. Solopreneurship – which in my vocabulary is a mix of freelancing + business ownership = hot topic. It’s important to combine expertise with hands-on experience. I think I understand anyone who’s going through the same ordeals.

These were real problems solo-entrepreneurs had: networking, selling, lifestyle management, work-life management, etc.

The next business idea and how to stay connected with the people that matter keep me up at night

Q3 From start to finish, what’s your process ensuring your article will get a lot social media shares?

The way I voice it. Visuals. Evergreen content. Solution-oriented approach.

Appeal to multiple audiences. Asking for help. Generating value. I’ll explain.

The voice counts. My dissertation thesis tested the occupational fatigue among freelancers. This has been under my radar for years. Active listening on social media helped me identify other issues.

The visuals also count. Great content deserves great visuals (infographics, gifs, videos, vines, images). In this particular case, I found a great infographic to go with my article.

Evergreen content. Yeah, the title says 2016, but the content says “anytime” type of issues addressed. Don’t be afraid to take note on occurring aspects.

Solution oriented approach. People will always share content that offers solutions to their problems. Write for people.

Multiple audiences. Entrepreneurs, freelancers, employees, startups, solopreneurs. Students. My article topic in this case worked for any human being, to be honest.

Ask for help. I have friends online. So I didn’t shy away from asking for help in sharing the article. Having connections in over 60 countries worldwide can definitely make the difference.  I have a h2h (human-to-human) approach with people I see as influencers in their niches. And I will ask for their help in spreading the word. I’d also place an open invitation to connect, and discuss the article. I’ve received great followup thanks to that.

It’s all about the value. I like making people’s lives easier. Telling them they’re not alone in this, and showing them a way out can make a difference. When you’re writing for a publication with millions of visitors/month, 100/1000 first shares fast will get you on homepage from homepage features >> newsletter. From there, the magic happens.

Main findings (2013) there’s work related fatigue and there’s mental fatigue. Found among freelancers too.

Mine generated 85,000 shares without a Click to Tweet. 🙂 I do have it for my personal blog.

Q4 Do you ever promote old content? Do you have a process for that too?

I’m very careful with what type of old content I promote. I would never promote something that is outdated.

But most of my articles are “ever-green” in-depth ones. And I do enjoy reading old valuable content by others too.

My process: I set up a personal @trello board, to keep track of my best articles, and reshare them, ask people to share them. It also helps me get inspired, and visualize my own progress/evolution/influence.

I love data, and numbers, so this helps me understand my own style better. Having a dedicated space for old content (list, or board, or folder) makes it easier to link to old content from fresh content.

I constantly use my own best old content to re-validate ideas. Call it the “FB memories” of a marketer. Same principle. Of course, blogger outreach and friends outreach to help re-use old content and generate new links, new shares.

Lately, I’m preparing videos for my Instagram businesses based on successful old content. It’s like you have a script at hand.

Extra tip: Use Insta Stories to tell people where they can access your old content. Or fresh one, for that matter. I occasionally do that for my @serplified business.

Also, old content can become newsletter content for your email subscribers. Or group updates for your social media groups.

Any type of content works. Text. Video. Image. Audio. 🙂

Q5 And our favorite part: Your favorite social media marketing tools! Also, were there any new tools coming up you checked yesterday or plan to give a try soon?

There are many apps I enjoy using. @MavSocial, @vcbuzz. Built-in scheduling.

But there are two apps I really enjoy using lately: @VoiceStorm for teams, and @DrumUpio.

@VoiceStorm is a great remote team app that allows you to build your own “sharing environment” through gamification principles. Also brings the whole team together in their sharing efforts.

@DrumUpio has a good “AI” type of function that gives suggestions of what’s hot, or sharing suggestions based on keyword. I will always make time, independent of how busy I am, to go out and hunt for hot topics.

And Manual search. And inter-connecting my social accounts. Manual search also helps me solidify my connections with other people on social media.

And Instagram has really got me this year, to be honest.

Oh and lately, I’m loving Telegram as a way to connect and share content on Instagram. And Instagram DM groups. Loving those, had some solid friendships created as a result.

I believe you can’t use one tool for all purposes. Each SM platform has its needs and requirements.

SM apps like Instagram and Snapchat need manual marketing, not automation. 🙂

What Works in Engagement Marketing with @PR_Kristyna #VCBuzz

Whenever we publish an article, we hope our readers will engage: We are looking forward to comments, shares and signups. Sadly we see less and less people engaging with us on both our blogs and social media.

The web is getting too cluttered for people to stop and talk! How to get people talk to us? Let’s discuss this on our chat!

About Kristyna

@PR_Kristyna is a social media savvy entrepreneur with years of experience in engaging communities around your brand.

Questions we are going to discuss

Q1 How did you become a digital marketer? Please tell your career story!

I started in nonprofit marketing while in college before social media was a thing. Working in nonprofits forced me to learn to ENGAGE a community and create a tribe around a certain cause.

Once social media came onto the scene I used my skills of connecting people to a mission- to connecting people on social media!

Q2 What is an engagement? Could you define the term and explain why it is important to get people engage with you and your content?

I define engagement as a CONNECTING your audience to your brand through humanizing it. Giving them a reason to become loyal.

Marketing without engaging your audience is basically a press release. Social media shouldn’t sound like a press release.

Remember, the first word in social media is SOCIAL.

Q3 What are some of the most efficient engagement marketing tactics that work for any niche?

The most effective engagement tactic is BE A HUMAN. Too many marketers schedule their content and wash their hands of it.

Scheduling is better than nothing, but you CAN’T schedule real engagement with your audience

Respond to comments, reply to messages, share THEIR content too! Engage with your community like a human

LISTEN to your audience – don’t create cookie cutter responses

Most marketers who are stuck in broadcast mode don’t realize social media is a whole different type of media. Completely not the same as an article.

Q4 How to engage people if you are very new to the industry? In other words, where to start?

New people / companies often think social media is a free marketing tool that doesn’t need any preparation. Change your thinking

Create content calendars, research analytics and algorithms, understand that engagement is a DAILY task with your audience

Figure out where your audience engages. Don’t assume they’re on the platform that is easy for YOU. Cater to THEM

Do a deep dive into the demographics of your audience. What ages are they? How do they communicate? What times of day…

Caring and hand holding should always be a priority with your audience. They are your VIPs! Create a content plan based around THEIR habits and engagement. Don’t post just because you think you should, or have a minute.

Q5 What are your favorite engagement marketing tools and why?

  • My favorite engagement marketing tool is ORGANIC engagment as a human. Get behind the screen and have a conversation.
  • To refine content and engagement, use tracking tools. I like @unionmetrics for Insta and Twitter.
  • In addition, utilize tools like @Canva to create engaging images
  • I love @BlueJeansNet because it is a great platform for live streaming to facebook

And don’t forget about the tools that each platform already offers! Use the insights tabs, turn on your alerts. And finally, don’t forget about VIDEO! Utilize live video capabilities and ENGAGE your audience authentically

How to Engage with Social Media Peers with Rebecca Councill @RebCouncill #VCBuzz

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a social media marketer? What’s your career story?

When social media for started and everyone was jumping on… I started paying attention and seeing what others were doing. As it became clear that it would be great for businesses I got on Twitter and started following some who were talking about how it could potentially help their business.

As classes and training started coming out.. I was absorbing all I could. And started it out on my current clients to see if I could make it work for them. Trials and tests for how I found my love for it.

Q2 How and why to effectively connect to social media peers? Do you have a process you try to follow on a regular basis?

I am not what I call a “traditional marketer”. I don’t use social to build my business contacts. I use it to create relationships that I like to nurture. I don’t just “friend” anyone on Facebook

I like to start on Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn and see how the relationship builds…if it does and a true friendship is built, then I will think about it… but most of my connections are started and built on Twitter or in Facebook Groups.

True fact, I meet some of the best peeps over social and form the best friendships with them. and and others are some examples!

It is harder to build true relationships in the groups without TONS of work.

Q3 How can small businesses with small marketing budgets use social media marketing to the maximum capacity? How to handle it without making it a full-time job?

Knowing your audience and your market is HUGE in keeping your spending down. Also look at others who are in your space who have had success and see if you can adapt it to your business.

Knowing how to start and not just stabbing air is always key. Do your research first and get your key specifics down. Know your goal, your audience and your keywords are great places to start

Q4 How can businesses measure the ROI of social media marketing? How to measure the success of an engagement campaign?

When starting out sometimes the best thing to measure is the engagement.. Are your views up, are you posting at the right time (do you know how to see if you are). Are more people liking, commenting or sharing your things.

One client I have, was getting no traction on FB, so I had them to to Twitter and start conversations over there… asking questions and building those relationships… then slowing sharing their FB posts over there.

We slowly starting to see their likes and shares go up. It is OK to cross post and find your balance… sometimes the measure of a campaign can be just in the views and the reach. If those are going up that is always a win (especially on Facebook).

Social Media is a slow thing and you have to remind the clients of that CONSTANTLY!

Remind them it is a marathon… NOT a SPRINT!! They are in it for the long haul! they HAVE TO BE!

Q5 What are your favorite social media engagement tools and why?

For me, I love the native platforms for analytics, and engagement-I find that the native platforms really do the best job at telling the story.

For monitoring many keywords one time, I use Tweetdeck. It is owned by Twitter and feels more native for me, for looking at analytics to see where the engagement is on on Instagram, UnionMetrics is my go to

I use @buffer for scheduling… for REAL TIME, I do native… copy the copy and paste to the other platform

2017 in Review: Thank You, Our Buzzers! #VCBuzz

$

vcbuzzThis year we introduced a few important updates to ViralContentBee:

  • We introduced visual tweets allowing our users to upload images to go with every tweet promoting their URL. This way we empowered our users to build more impactful and engaging tweets around their content because visual tweets do work!
  • We offered more transparency when it comes to scheduled and buffered updates allowing our users to see where their projects are scheduled to be shared and even giving them tools to control that, i.e. remove any scheduled share and release credits

Among smaller updates, we increased the tweet character limit, quickly following Twitter news on that 280 character limit.

We also got quite a bit of publicity from our awesome members. Mind you: We don’t have an affiliate program (just yet), nor we ever paid for a single review of Viral Content Bee! These are all totally unbiased unpaid mentions and reviews our users write because they love us! And we just cannot be more grateful!

We made it to TOP lists several times:

How to Set up Fully Functioning, Living and Breathing Affiliate eCommerce Website with Patrick Coombe @pmkoom #VCBuzzThere’s never such a thing as too much experimenting or too much money, so we continue bringing you ideas of new Internet ventures you may want to check out.

Today we are talking about setting up a new eCommerce project to give you an idea of how you can create a new digital source of scalable income.

About Patrick

Patrick Coombe @pmkoom is an internet marketer by profession, and has been self-employed as an SEO since 2009.

Past accomplishments include US Navy veteran of the USS Boxer also studied Computer Science at McCann School of Business in Pottsville, PA.

Currently Patrick is founder of an SEO company called Elite Strategies @elitestweets

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a digital marketer? Please share your career story!

I started programming and building PC’s when I was 8 years old thanks to my Father. From there it was all I ever wanted! I learned HTML in the 90’s then “caught the bug” … MySpace themes was my first hustle only making a few bucks but full blown addiction.

In the 2000’s I started building websites as a hobby, lots of other interweb stuff. In 2009 I started @elitestweets and launched affiliate marketing campaigns.

Q2 When someone wants to set up a new eCommerce site, where should they start? What are the first steps?

Choose a niche! Choose something you are knowledgeable about. Find something you truly love and are passionate about. If you love to say crochet, or ride unicycles, or go hiking, find a niche you can personally relate to… I know people that don’t do this and just hire writers, but its much easier if you do

I can’t tell you how many people I see making websites for e.g. “blenders and smoothies” when they have zero knowledge of the industry.

From there, knowledge of HTML. Learn to make a website top to bottom with only HTML. If you already have exp. I recommend #WordPress / @WooCommerce make it so easy from there.

For new users: buy a new domain and hosting and setup a “test site” on your own. IMO the easiest way to LEARN is to DO

Q3 How to effectively optimize, monetize and market a new eCommerce site?

  • Optimize – ensure all on-page SEO is on POINT (our on-page SEO guide) make sure your site loads FAST and is mobile friendly (very key)
  • Monetize – this will vary, if its #eCommerce than obviously product sales but you can add in ad impressions or affiliate links as well, build traffic and a following, and monetization will ALWAYS work itself out!
  • Market – the fun part about eCommerce is once you start getting sales you can use your customers to promote the products you sold to them. want 10% off? can you tag yourself in a photo with the product you are using? (just one example)

Q4 When it’s built, how much time commitment are we talking about here? What should and can be scaled? What should be delegated? What should we keep an eye on daily or weekly?

Like any business, the more you put into it the more you get out of it. I know people that do 1 hour daily, and those with a full team doing it full time. SEO and social are super important. Making sure you are connecting with your audience and customers.

As for time commitment, one hour per day minimum I would say, the more the better! On a daily basis you need to respond to people on social, do outreach, add new products, respond to emails, deal with people

Q5 What are some digital marketing (design, testing, affiliate, SEO, etc.) tools you use on a regular basis?

Ok here we go:

  • Notepad++ (everything from coding to regex),
  • Screamingfrog for on-page SEO,
  • Photoshop CS6,
  • #WordPress and @WooCommerce obviously,
  • I love Ahrefs the good folks at Moz, Semrush as well for all things affiliate
  • Google Keyword Planner,
  • Google Keep (drafting content ideas)
  • ShareX (making cool screenshots and screen share videos),
  • Excel,
  • piwik for analytics (it’s more of a “support small open source projects than Google’ for me but Google Analytics is a solid option too!),
  • spyfu for competitor insight

How to Create a Successful Social Video Campaign with @TawannaBSmith #vcbuzz

$

How to Create a Successful Social Video Campaign with Tawanna Browne Smith @TawannaBSmith #vcbuzzVideo marketing has been growing for quite a few years now. Video creation is no longer only big businesses can afford: There are tools and platforms in place allowing anyone to engage in video marketing.

But where to start and how to succeed? Let’s discuss!

***Add #VCBuzz chats to your calendar here.

***Please sign in here to follow the chat -> twchat.com/hashtag/vcbuzz

About Tawanna

Tawanna Browne Smith @TawannaBSmith is founder of Mom’s Guide To Travel and MGTT Media training entrepreneurs and small businesses to effectively use live video and digital marketing for customer attraction.

Tawanna began working in the digital space in 2008, growing and learning with each iteration of emerging platforms, social networks and apps.

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a digital marketer? Please share your career story!

When I started in 2008, ironically, I started with videos about traveling with my young kids. Soon after I started writing about travel with an online travel publication called the Nile Guide.

I had also joined a twitter community called Twitter Moms at the time, where we did social media campaigns for brands.

Love that! You kept doing the thing you loved and made it work in the digital space.

Yesss! And obviously, you all here know the value of …especially on

Then I started doing social media marketing before it was called that just to share my content with friends and strangers online. First there was video, then blogging, then Twitter & article writing, newsletters, ebooks, Instagram, Pinterest, webinars, live video…somewhat in that order

Q2 When a business wants to start a video marketing campaign, for the first time, where do they start?

First place to start is with your strategy & going wherever your audience is. Outline what you want to achieve w/ your videos.

Agreed!

If you know your strategy & your goals, that’ll help you determine the types of videos you’re going to create. Then you want to start creating your content plan.

Q3 Why live video? How can a business monetize their live video efforts?

Live video offers the creator more immediate engagement. It also allows your audience to connect with you faster. Monetization can look a number of different ways. Start with the conversion first.

Give your viewers highly valuable content then offer them something. It can be a freebie, a product or a service or event sales. I’ve sold digital products & services.

You can re-package your live videos, sell them as a course, put them behind a paywall like in a private group and charge membership. Lots of ideas.

Q4 What’s your favorite (live) video marketing platform and why?

That’s tough but Periscope is my fave live platform mainly b/c of the engagement & instant gratification.

The notification feature & the singularity of the Periscope app does a better job at getting people’s attention & keeping it than other platforms, in my opinion.

Also, the fact that Periscope is integrated into Twitter, where I have a larger audience, also makes a big difference & is a major reason why it’s on the top of my list. This doesn’t mean you won’t find me on FB Live. It’s a very close second just b/c Facebook offers a lot more flexibility and possibilities.

Yes, this is a good point. Especially if you’re already on FB. If you don’t have a FB page or profile then you can consider the other platforms first.

I have biz pages & groups on FB where I can syndicate my lives, automate repurposing to my blog, create ads, & do some cool messenger marketing things.

Start where your audience hangs out. Where do they hang out mostly?

And where do you have the most engagement?

Then that’s where you want to start. Don’t try to be in all places doing live all at once. Get your feet wet. You should definitely download that free strategy guide I mentioned.

Yes! There is a lot of potential – it’s not tapped into as much as it can be presently because I think many brands don’t know how they want to/can integrate it with what they’re already doing.

Q5 What are your favorite video creation and marketing tools?

To point out a few, Shakr and Ripl are two of my fave tools for social marketing videos. I’m a big fan of templates that have transitions & formatting already designed. It’s like plug & play for videos.

For my live videos, I use Live for pretty much all my FB Lives that I do from my desktop & JustBroadcaster for Periscope. Then Repurpose.io to repurpose to YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, Soundcloud.

I use quite a few tools & I keep them, my workflows, editorial calendar & episode breakdowns all in one place in my Live Video Planner which I now sell & teach in a workshop. You can learn more here.

Inexpensive, familiarity with the company, sends to YouTube, cool developers & community, lots of screens & other features.

Yes sir! You have the option once you wrap your live session up to send to YouTube directly.

About @ShawnPaulWood

@ShawnPaulWood has been working with advertising and public relations agencies for 15 years. His background is in radio and news.

Today, as founder and Chief Carpenter of Woodworks Communications, Shawn’s goal is to provide companies and causes with an integrated platform and an energized digital campaigns.

Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you become a digital marketer? Please share your career story!

I’ve been in this long enough to remember working with faxes, dialing with landlines, and researching with Encyclopedias. To make my career work, I never sacrificed evolution.

From traditional to social, and all things digital, the blueprint was simple — great content = great business. It’s the circle of life.

So, I did a cannonball into the deep end of algorithms and learned how was forcing us to become better content developers.

Q2 You’ve been involved in public relationships business for many years (even back when you were a radio host)… What were the biggest changes in the business you saw happen?

To me, ‘s market share wasn’t a surprise. Really, its leadership and ingenuity was. Big data blazed the trail and we ran after it.

Clients demand more for their dollar, which is why it’s crucial to build relationships… and sustain it with better content, platforms, and overall work.

Q3 Keeping all the changes in mind, how to set up a successful digital PR campaign these days?

“SMART” KPIs. Goals are great but without metrics to prove growth, clients have nothing to hang their hat on. They need to visualize your work to experience theirs.

Another thing is “Know Your Audience.” It’s cliche but often misunderstood. They tell you what they need. Your content should match it for relevance and reach.

Q4 What’s the future of digital PR and how to get ready for it?

Great question (because there’s so much to say). The future is the present — Content. Understanding how to write for the Web is paramount (Ideas AND Algorithms).

Q5 What are your favorite digital marketing tools you can recommend?

I dig (and use): GA, @Moz, @Trello, @HubSpot, @Canva, @Feedly, @Buffer or @Hootsuite, and my dudes at @Brandwatch.

And please feel free to add to that list of #digitalmarketing tools. There are so many out there.

And this is why great chats like this works. I’ve learned two great things today and followed a few more. Love it!

Alissa M. Trumbull @AnOrchidInBloom works in campaign and event management. She is co-founder of @BizGalz.

@AnOrchidInBloom is also ambassador for #Foodiechats & #SocialRoadTrip.

Questions we discussed

Q1 Why is it important to be part of community when building your online presence?  How did you end up being part of three active communities: #BizGalz, #Foodiechats & #SocialRoadTrip. Why those?

Communities are great both online and offline for meeting people and learning more about what you’re interested in. I love the group for that very reason.

is a passion project and I started about 2 1/2 years ago (wow!). It’s been wonderful building that community.

was the first Twitter chat I EVER participated in! They celebrated their 350th consecutive chat last night! (WHOOP!) I can’t always join anymore, but the community is always close to my heart.

is simply incredible. founded it a few years ago. It’s an amazing way to take your online relationships to in-person relationships. We have meetups a few times a year. The next one is in July in San Diego.

Q2 How to search for communities to join when you are just entering a niche? How to identify which ones are worth spending time at?

Always use your network. Talk to friends and colleagues to see which communities they fund valuable around a topic in which you’re interested.

Be sure to do your research. There are a lot of wonderful communities out there (like for coding, cooking, and more). You need to find the one(s) that are right for you and what you’re looking for.

Twitter chats are an amazing way to find different communities for topics you’re interested in pursuing.

Exactly! I shouted out #JustBeSocial earlier. It’s pretty much my favorite chat. And it happens 24/7.

Q3 How to make yourself comfortable in a new community? How to build partnerships and friendships when you are new and shy?

Say hello. That’s often all you need to get a conversation started.

If you’re joining a community as a “newbie” you already have some common ground around the community’s focus/topic. Start there. Share about why you find it interesting.

Spot on with that, Josh! A little listening goes a long way.

Q4 Are there people you learned social media networking from? Please list some of community building mentors and influencers you are following

Definitely , , , . These are some of my favorite community builders.

Q5 What are your favorite networking and community building tools?

Twitter and Facebook groups are my favorite places to engage with people and communities that are of interest to me.

My favorite Facebook groups are for a few organizations of which I am a member. I also love the group.
